Twitter is the second most popular social media platform online today and it has the enviable ability to connect you to your audience instantly.
Twitter can help to drive a constant flow of traffic to your website and can introduce your brand to thousands of people that you may have found it hard to reach otherwise. But how do you maximise your Twitter campaign and ensure that you reach as many people as possible.
Unfortunately, because of the fast pace of Twitter, many people simply fire out tweets without thinking about what they are doing or how effective their tweets are. It’s really easy to go from ‘enthusiastic poster’ to ‘annoying spammer’ overnight and this can really damage your Twitter reputation.
Whilst the information you are giving out may not be spam, the way you are delivering it could label you as a spammer and if people think this of you they will probably end up resenting you and unfollowing you.
Mass Tweeting
We’ve all seen this before. You start following somebody and within moments you’re receiving 15 tweets from them in an hour.
This doesn’t build relationships and can actually alienate your audience. After all, you don’t want a relative stranger crowding your Twitter feed with hundreds of tweets every day.
A better idea is to use a scheduling system to push out your tweets on a regular basis, but only use them when you really have something good to say. When you schedule your posts at a set time (say, 9am) your followers will look forward to your tweets and look out for them.
Don’t Automate Direct Messages
Never automate your direct messages even to thank somebody for following you. Try to respond personally to each new follow if you can and refrain from sending any more messages unless it is absolutely necessary. Don’t use direct messages as a way to send people to your site or download your eBook. They will not appreciate it.
Avoid Filler Tweets
Many people make the mistake of feeling that they have to say something. This can result in lots of unfunny one liners or links to their website being pushed on their followers.
Don’t feel that you have to use filler. If you haven’t said anything for a while it could be that you just need to think about something good to say. A tweet with real value will be retweeted and a retweet is a great way to get new followers.
Twitter is an excellent platform for putting out your message and getting others to spread the word, but you need to use it wisely and sparingly in order for it to be effective.
