The Seven Golden Rules of PPC Marketing

Pay per click is exactly as its name suggests. Every time somebody clicks on your ad, you pay. The amount you pay will depend on the keywords you are using in your ad and how much you bid on that particular keyword (more on that later).

Pay Per Click or PPC as it is also known can be great for business but it needs to be managed effectively and shrewdly. Our six golden rules should give you an insight into how to run a successful PPC campaign.

Rule Number 1 – Keywords

It’s important that you select the keywords for your campaign with great care so that they reflect what you are selling or the service you are providing. Good keywords attract more visitors but bear in mind that your competitors will be eyeing up the same keywords as you.

Keywords help people to find you and it’s important that you choose keywords that your target audience are most likely to use when searching for your products or services.

Rule Number 2 – Make That Ad Count

Most PPC search engine services set strict limits on the amount of characters you can use in your ad. Therefore, it pays to spend a little time constructing your ad so that you can work in your keywords and make your ad compelling. Aim to keep the keyword in the headline and body of your ad for the best results. In doing so you should achieve higher click through rates – that is the number of people clicking on your ad.

Rule Number 3 – Keep Out of Bidding Wars

It can be very tempting to enter into bidding wars for the best keywords, but this could put you out of pocket. Leave the heavily popular keywords to the big boys (unless you are already one yourself of course!) and take a look at some of the lesser used but still popular keywords.

Look at your business. Do you have a USP? Find the keywords that relate to your USP and then use them in your ads!

You’ll be targeting niche and specialist markets sure, but that could work out more lucrative than trying to afford more popular and expensive keywords.

Set your PPC budget and stick to it!

Rule Number 4 – Monitor Your Bidding Amount

One mistake many people make when setting their bidding amount is to forget to monitor it. This will ensure you never go over budget and that you always stay within your means.

Rule Number 5 – Take Them To Your Landing Page

Make sure your ad takes your visitors directly to your landing page for the product or service the ad relates to. Don’t expect your visitors to hunt around as they won’t! They will simply flit off into the sunset never to be seen again.

Rule Number 6 – Track Your Results

We can’t stress enough how important it is to monitor your results. Most PPC search engines have good performance and traffic monitoring tools that you can use to tweak and monitor your PPC campaign.

If a PPC campaign just isn’t doing the business for you then you can make changes to that it starts performing how you want it to.
