Tweet Tw…. Twitter Shortens Tweet Length

News | 20th Feb

Twitter is now reducing the number of characters you can tweet.

As of today if you’re tweeting out a URL, you may notice your tweets just got a little bit shorter! Any tweet sent with a URL will be reduced to 118 characters, or 117 for https links.

This was first announced in December 2012, the character reduction is due to a small change in what Twitter calls it’s ‘t.co link wrapper’. Twitters definition of the t.co link is as follows:

Twitter uses the t.co domain as part of a service to protect users from harmful activity, to provide value for the developer ecosystem, and as a quality signal for surfacing relevant, interesting Tweets.

The way the t.co link wrapper works is by extending the maximum length of t.co wrapped links from 20 to 22 characters for non-https URLs and from 21 to 23 characters for https URLs. So now the condensed links take up a bit more space, thus leaving you with a little less space to tweet.
